La Caleta Submarine National Park covers an area of 10.1 km2 and is located approximately 22 kilometers from Santo Domingo on the outskirts of town, heading east. La Caleta is the smallest national park in the country and also one of the most visited, is considered one of the five best diving areas in the Caribbean. It was declared a national park under the decree No. 249 of 25 September 1986.

The park has a main attraction is the boat "The Hickory" which was sunk on purpose in 1984 to create an artificial reef for marine life and promote a safe habitat for endangered species. Other shipwreck present are: "El Limon", "El Catuan" (offshore Boca Chica) and "Tanya V" (near Juan Dolio).

The depth of the submarine area is 180 meters; divers can explore shipwrecks, and those who can swim snorkel among coral reefs accessible from the park's beach. La Caleta Underwater Park has an irregular topography with three well-defined reef terraces, and these run parallel to the coastline.

 

     
 

 

In the depths of 10 to 50 will find a series of reef communities where a great quantity of fish colorful use corals as shelter and food source. Also within the park is the Ethnological and Archaeological Museum, where you can see a large collection of Taino objects.
